Young people who are worried are rapidly increasing!? Constipation and hemorrhoids Young people who are worried are rapidly increasing!? Constipation and hemorrhoids

Recently, young women who worry about constipation and hemorrhoids are increasing due to dieting. Women have a tendency to become constipated in the first place in relation to the influence of female hormones or weakness in abdominal muscles. In order to relieve constipation, let’s begin with reviewing dietary life and lifestyle habits.

Constipation and hemorrhoids are connected! These two happen in this way

● With constipation, there are mainly three types

Always being in a state of constipation is called “habitual constipation” and it is classified into three major types, (1) “atonic constipation” – the function of the large intestine is reduced and feces are not passed smoothly, (2) “rectal constipation” – occurs when holding bowel movement when sensing the urge to have it, and (3) “spastic constipation” – colon cramps stops bowel movement.

● Causes of constipation for young people are holding the urge and stress

“Atonic constipation” mostly happens to old people, but “rectal constipation” and “spastic constipation” are the types of constipation that may happen to young women. The pattern of “rectal constipation” is, for example, getting up in the morning and sensing the urge to have a bowel movement, but holding the urge to avoid being late or missing the chance to go to the bathroom at work in shame, and losing the urge in the meantime. On the other hand, with “spastic constipation”, round faces like rabbit’s faces are passed due to stress. It is also a symptom of irritable bowel syndrome which repeats constipation and diarrhea caused by too much stress, and characterized by having abdominal pains.

● Tendency of becoming constipated before the period is caused by female hormone influence

Some women may say “I always become constipated before my period”. This is due to the influence of “progestational hormone” which is a type of female hormone. When secretion of this “progestational hormone” is increased, bowel peristalsis (movement to send food and feces) becomes weak. For this reason, more women become constipated before the period when there is more secretion of this.

● Skipping breakfast or an unhealthy diet also causes constipation

Skipping breakfast also causes constipation. There is a system of the body that receiving food in an empty stomach stimulates bowel peristalsis and causes the urge to have a bowel movement. However, if you skip breakfast, this system does not work or cause the urge to have a bowel movement. As a result, you become constipated. Additionally, if you are trying out an unhealthy diet, sufficient feces cannot be produced because of a decreased amount of food.

● Increasing among young people! Constipation eventually results in hemorrhoids

Hemorrhoids have an image where “women who experience pregnancy and delivery get hemorrhoids”, and there are actually lots of such people, but recently more unmarried young women are getting hemorrhoids from habitual constipation or stress-related diarrhea. Not doing anything regarding constipation increases the chance to get hemorrhoids.

● ”Bleeding hemorrhoids” and “blind piles” are common among women

There are three types of hemorrhoids, (1) anal fissures (bleeding hemorrhoids), (2) hemorrhoids (blind piles), and (3) anal fistula, and fissures and blind piles are types of hemorrhoids which are comparatively common among women. Bleeding hemorrhoids are a type of hemorrhoid in which the anus is split and bleeds when straining to push feces out. Blind piles occur when veins around anus become congested due to straining during bowel movement and swell like a bump. Anal fistula is a type that produces pain and fever by perianal suppuration caused by bacterium and is common among men.

● If you get hemorrhoids….

If you get hemorrhoids, try not to push too hard in the bathroom when passing stool or sit for long periods to avoid congestion. Try to go easy on alcoholic drinks, cigarettes, and spices. It is important to keep your anus clean by using a [European] Bidet-type toilet during bowel movement, and/or taking a warm shower while bathing.

● Female-only outpatient department for proctology

If symptoms of hemorrhoids are few and bleeding is not much, try to treat using over-the-counter type cream for insertion, creams for hemorrhoids, or suppositories. If hemorrhoids are persistent, try to consult a proctology department. Even for a person who feels “a little embarrassed to see proctology doctor”, there are more hospitals recently that offer outpatient departments for only females such as “female only on X day of the week”, or examinations by female doctors. If there is a situation where the condition is deteriorated and causing problems in daily life, there may be a case where surgery is necessary, but there are methods with almost no pain in recent surgical procedures for hemorrhoids because of advances in medical technology. It is recommended to consult a proctology department before it gets worse.

● Take high-fiber rich foods

In order to relieve constipation, it is most important to review dietary life and lifestyle habits relating to having a “good appetite and good bowel movement”. Please avoid especially doing any kind of extreme diet because it has a bad effect not only on constipation but also on your menstrual cycle. Try to have three square meals a day, breakfast, lunch and dinner. It is said that drinking a glass of milk or water right after getting up in the morning becomes stimulating, activating your bowels, and causes an impulse to have a bowel movement. In addition, try to take fiber rich food. There are two types of fiber, water soluble and water insoluble, and it is important to take them in a balanced manner. Water soluble fiber has a function to soften stool and examples of this group are seaweed including kelp and hijiki (a kind of edible seaweed), and mushrooms including shiitake mushroom and eringi mushroom. Meanwhile, water insoluble fiber has a function to increase the volume of stool by absorbing moisture, and activating bowel peristalsis. Root vegetables including Chinese radish, burdock, lotus root, tubers and root vegetables including potatoes, and greens such as spinach and turnip greens contain a lot of it. Beans such as soybean, cereals and brown rice are rich in (water insoluble) fiber and are recommended. Also, food like yogurt which increases good bacterium, creates a good intestinal environment and is most suitable for improving bowel movement.

● Make a habit of bowel movement after getting up in the morning

Drinking a glass of water or having a breakfast after getting up in the morning helps to sense the need to have a bowel movement. When you feel a bowel movement, try to sit on the toilet immediately without holding. In order to do so, it is important to get up a little earlier and have relaxed time in the morning.

● Sitting for long periods tends to result in constipation

Women have weaker abdominal muscles compared to men, and because of that, power to pushing stool out is also weak, and tend to become constipated. It may be good to develop abdominal muscles on a regular basis, like performing exercises before going to the bed. Especially, a person who works and sits for long periods of time tends to become constipated. They may have weak abdominal muscles and they tend to get hemorrhoids, and caution needs to be taken. Try to exercise moderately, for example, stand up and walk around every hour, and stretch by moving your legs while sitting.
